Ni Hao is a series of tutorial courseware for learning Chinese listening,
speaking, reading and writing skills. The target users are beginning learners
of Chinese from upper primary to high school, and advanced learners of Chinese
in senior high schools. There are five levels in the Ni Hao series, starting
from introductory to higher advance. The Introductory level and Elementary level
is intended to teach basic Chinese dialogue and Chinese characters. The Intermediate
level is designed for teaching, besides dialogue and characters, basic reading
skills. The Advanced level is created for teaching advanced Chinese dialogue
and intermediate reading skills.
Materials in each level include a textbook, student workbook, audio-cassettes/CD,
teacher’s handbook, CD-ROM game software and CD-ROM language lab software.
However, the following review only evaluates the Ni Hao textbook and Language
Lab software.
The design of the Ni Hao textbook with Language Lab edition requires users to
utilize the textbook with the CD-ROM language lab software. Simplified Chinese
and the Pinyin pronunciation system are used throughout Ni Hao. Traditional
Chinese is only used as a supplement in the Appendix of each level.
The content of each level is organized by lessons focusing on different topics.
The Introductory to Intermediate levels also contain review lessons and an appendix
with a list of supplementary vocabulary. The Advanced level, however, includes
four themes consisting of four topics each.
